RTS International leads the way with Limpet® in a world’s first for offshore blade inspection and maintenance

RTS International has won a contract with new joint venture company MHI Vestas Offshore Wind (MVOW)™ to deploy IRATA Level 3 and Composite Engineers to assist in inspection and minor repair of blades using the Limpet® M5 Multi-Functional Height Safety System. The use of this system is a world first for the offshore wind industry.

Specialising in fall protection, climb assist and personnel hoists, Edinburgh based Limpet Technology have specifically developed the Limpet® M5 to meet the demanding operations and maintenance requirements of the latest generation of offshore turbines. Certified for offshore use by Germanischer Lloyd, the Limpet® M5 incorporates remote controlled personnel hoisting that will allow RTS’ engineers to precisely position themselves on the 45 metre long blades of the Vestas V90-3.0 MW turbines, with significantly less time and physical effort than using traditional rope access methods. The Limpet® M5 additionally offers enhanced safety features that will allow RTS workers to be rapidly rescued by colleagues in the event of an emergency.

Following an exclusive 2-year agreement signed with Limpet Technology in October last year, RTS International is the only renewable technical services provider in the UK with Limpet System accredited engineers. After several successful inspection and repair projects onshore, in which the Limpet® proved its credentials, the contract with MHI Vestas will see the Limpet® M5 used commercially offshore for the first time.

Chris Palmer, Managing Director at RTS International commented: “The advantages of using the Limpet System offshore are huge. The main benefit is the increased safety for our engineers but the system also delivers efficiency gains for the client. We are able to complete the minor repairs in less time with fewer engineers and less equipment required on-site - it’s a win-win situation.  We are also delighted to be transferring our knowledge to MVOW Engineers during this programme to enable them to become self-sufficient with the Limpet system.”

Asger Pedersen, Senior Service Director for MHI Vestas added: “MHI Vestas is committed to strong partnerships and supply chain collaboration in developing innovative solutions to optimise our service capabilities, and are pleased to be able to work with RTS in this endeavor.”

Stephen Cornwallis, CEO for Limpet Technology stated: “Lowering the cost and risk of offshore wind is at the top of the industry’s priority list and this project powerfully demonstrates how collaboration between committed, innovative and forward looking players can deliver on that promise. The Limpet® M5 is our new flagship product and we are very proud and pleased to be able to showcase it on this project with RTS and MHI Vestas Offshore Wind.”
